Some of the major pharmacy chains are offering programs to enable the consumers to purchase generic drugs at lower costs.
The drugs that are covered may vary among the different programs. Some programs may require membership fee. Some programs may also offer discount on brand-name drugs. If you are taking brand-name drugs and you want to reduce your out-of-pocket costs, you may want to consult with your doctors to find out if there are generic equivalents. Following is a brief summary of some of these programs.
Pharmaceutical Company Drug Discount CardsSome pharmaceutical companies offer drug discount cards for their specific drugs. These cards can be very valuable as they can help you reduce the costs significantly. For example, the discount card offered by Warner Chilcott for the prescription drug Doryx enables the consumer to pay only $25 or less when the normal price may be in the $400 range.

Walgreens
Walgreens offers a Prescription Savings Club that offers a 90-day supply of more than 400 generic medications for $12. The list of generic medications includes commonly prescribed medications for the treatment of pain, asthma, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and women’s health. Walgreens Prescription Savings Club also offers savings on more than 5,000 brand name and generic medications in every drug category. A $20 membership fee is required. Wal-Mart
Wal-Mart offers a $4 Prescription Program that covers more than 1,000 over-the-counter medicines. Wal-Mart also offers a program that includes prescriptions for up to 350 generic medications at $10 for a 90-day supply. Purchasing or signing-up for a pharmacy discount card is not required. The program is available at Wal-Mart stores, Neighborhood Markets and Sam’s Club. Contact Wal-Mart for more information.
CVS/Longs
Currently, it does not seem that CVS is offering any drug discount programs. Contact CVS for more information.
RiteAid
RiteAid offers a free Rx Savings Card. Users can save on more than 500 common prescriptions. A user can pay just $8.99 for 30-days of select generics, and $15.99 for 90 days. Restrictions may apply. Users may also use the card to get disount on brand name drugs. Contact RiteAid for more information.
Target
Target has a generic drug program on more than 300 generic drugs that costs $4 for a 30 days supply and $10 for a 90 days supply. Contact Target for more information.
Kroger
Kroger also has a generic drug program on more than 300 generic drugs that costs $4 for a 30 days supply and $10 for a 90 days supply. Contact Kroger for more information.
Gift Cards
CVS and Walgreens frequently offer gift cards to consumers when they transfer their prescription from another pharmacy. Although it may be a one-time deal, the value of the gift cards may offset the copay resulting in some savings. Certain requirements may need to be met.
